어느날 ESPN DEPORTES에서 WBC관련 일러스트레이션을 작업할 16개국의 대표 아티스트를 찾고 있다고 나에게 연락이 왔다.
나는 한국의 대표 아티스트로 참여하게 되었고, 에이전시 ARTEK과 함께 ESPN DEPORTES의 WBC 포스터 작업에 참여하게 되었다.
한국의 문화유산과 국민 스포츠 중 하나인 야구를 주제로 한 나의 작품을 만들려 하였다.
IN 2017 ,ESPN Has Collected Several Artworks From Many Countries That Play Baseball at the WBC league. I am the Korean representative artist of this project. I created this artwork in the background of Korean traditional culture and history.
2017 년 월드 베이스볼 클래식 ESPN Deportes에서는 경기에 참여하는 16개국의 아티스트들 16 명을 선발하였다. 아티스트 중 일부를 작가 중 일부를 만나 영상으로 제작하며, 각 국가를 대표하는 아티스트 포스터 16 점을 발표하였다. 미국의 Beisbol의 스페인어 홈인 ESPN Deportes는 2017 년 World Baseball Classic에 대한 포괄적인 멀티미디어 보도를 제공 할 예정이다. 네트워크는 최대 22 개의 황금 시간대를 포함하여 최대 45 개의 경기를 방송합니다.
Meet some of the 16 artists who worked on designing posters representing the 16 countries competing in the 2017 World Baseball ClassicESPN Deportes is unveiling a collection of 16 posters representing each country competing in the tournament. ESPN Deportes, the Spanish-language home of Beisbol in the U.S., will provide comprehensive, multimedia coverage of the 2017 World Baseball Classic. The network will air up to 45 games, including up to 22 primetime windows.

나는 월드베이스볼클래식 일러스트레이션의 구성으로 한국의 대표 메이저리거 4명을 떠올렸다.
I remembered four major-leaguers in Korea as the composition of the World Baseball Classic Illustration.
메이저리거 4명으로 디자인 구성을 잡은 이유는 한국이 가진 숫자 "4"의 의미를 담고 싶었다.
동양의 한국에서 "4" 라는 의미는 각 방위를 수호하고 상징하는 신 "사신"을 뜻하며, 사신으로는 "좌청룡" , "우백호" , "전주작" , "후현무"를 뜻한다.
The reason I made the artwork with four major-leaguers wanted to include the meaning of "4" in Korea.
In South Korea, "4" means the god (four gods) who defend the north, south, east and west. There are four gods: BLUE DRAGON, BAEKHO, JOOJAK, and HYUNMOO.
각 사신은 또한 하나씩의 오행 및 색을 상징하기도 한다.
Each god also symbolizes a set of the five Elements and colors.
"청룡"은 동쪽과 봄, 그리고 나무와 청색
"백호"는 서쪽과 가을, 그리고 금과 백색
"주작"은 남쪽과 여름, 그리고 불과 적색
"현무"는 북쪽과 겨울, 그리고 물과 흑색
"BLUE DRAGON" is east and spring, and trees and blue.
"BAEKHO" is the west and autumn, and gold and white.
"JOOJAK" is the south, summer, and fire and red.
"HYUNMOO" means north and winter, and water and black.
이들 사신들은 동아시아의 별자리의 이야기와 전설을 그리고 있다.
These are telling stories and legends of constellations in East Asia.
나는 한국의 문화를 기반으로 스포츠 야구를 한국의 전통 문화와 함께 의미있는 일러스트레이션으로 담고 싶었다.
I wanted to express baseball as meaningful illustration along with Korean traditional culture based on Korean culture.
한국의 전통문화 양식을 기반으로 주변 배경을 구성하였습니다.
한국에는 많은 국보가 존재하며, 그 국보들은 유네스코에 등재가 될 만큼 가치가 있는 문화양식들 입니다.
나는 대표적인 한국의 문화양식 중 가장 소중하다고 생각되는 대표적인 문화양식으로 콘셉트를 잡았습니다.
그리고 상상하여 조합을 하게 되었습니다.
Based on the traditional culture style of Korea, we set up the background.
There are many national treasures in Korea, and the national treasures are cultural forms worthy of being listed on UNESCO.
I took the concept as a representative cultural form that I think is the most important of the representative Korean cultural styles.
And I imagined. I wanted to draw a picture that could express all of this.

Four representative major-leaguers in Korea
(Choo Shin-soo, Lee Dae-ho, Kim Hyun-su, Kang Jeong-ho)
1.추신수 - Choo Shin-soo
"청룡" 으로 동쪽과 봄, 그리고 나무와 청색을 상징하는 선수는 한국의 "추신수" 로 정하였다.
그는 정확한 타구를 보여주며, 언제나 날카로운 시선으로 상대를 제압하는 능력을 가지고 있다.
"BLUE DRAGON" is east and spring, and trees and blue.
He has an accurate batting ability and always has the ability to defeat opponents with a keen eye.
2. 이대호 - Lee Dae-ho
"백호"는 서쪽과 가을, 그리고 금과 백색을 상징하는 선수는 한국의 "이대호" 로 정하였다.
그는 강력한 타구를 보여주며, 언제나 앞도적인 기량으로 상대를 제압하는 능력을 가지고 있다.
"BAEKHO" is the west and autumn, and gold and white.
He has a powerful batting ability and always has the ability to control opponents with advanced skills.
3. 김현수 - Kim Hyun-su
"주작"은 남쪽과 여름, 그리고 불과 적색을 상징하는 선수는 한국의 "김현수" 로 정하였다.
그는 재치있는 타구를 보여주며, 언제나 팀에 기여를 하며 안정적으로 시합을 운용하는 능력을 가지고 있다.
"JOOJAK" is the south, summer, and fire and red.
He has a witty batting ability, and always has the ability to contribute to the team and lead the game in a stable manner.
4. 강정호 - Kang Jeong-ho
"현무"는 북쪽과 겨울, 그리고 물과 흑색을 상징하는 선수는 한국의 "추신수" 를 설정 하였습니다.
그는 다양한 타구를 보여주며, 영리한 경기 진행과 앞도적인 기량으로 상대팀을 압도하는 능력을 가지고 있다.
"HYUNMOO" means north and winter, and water and black.
He has a variety of batting skills, a clever play, and the ability to outsmart the opponent with his advanced skills.
태극 - Tai Chi
- 음과 양을 뜻하는 태극은 흑/백의 양면성, 세상의 이치를 담고 있는 문양이다.
한국의 국기에는 이 모든 의미가 포함되어져 있다.
- Taegeuk, which means Yin and Yang, is a pattern containing both sides of black / white and the meaning of the world.
The Korean flag contains all of these meanings.
한국의 국기에 있는 태극의 의미를 작품속에서 메이저리거들과 요소의 중요한 매개체로 구성하고 싶었다.
I wanted to construct the meaning of Taegeuk in the Korean flag as an important medium of major-leaguers and elements in my artwork.
